i30 N TCR customers got off to a superb start at the first races of the TCR Malaysia season at the Sepang Circuit (January 17-18). Coming into the year as the defending series champion Luca Engstler got his campaign off to the perfect start – after heading both qualifying sessions to take pole position the German led every lap on his way to victory to start the weekend.

The Race 1 pole position then put Engstler on the back row of the grid for the second contest of the meeting. However, he was still able to drive up to third on the opening lap, while his teammate – Austrian Nicolas Gruber – had moved into the lead off the start.

Gruber held strong throughout the race to claim a maiden TCR victory on his first outing with the i30 N TCR. Engstler, however, fell back from the podium places in the closing laps after picking up a slow puncture.

Australian Declan Fraser completed the team’s trio of entries for the weekend, taking a best result of fourth away from his i30 N TCR debut.
