Reigning champion Sérgio Jimenez claimed his first victory of the new season in an eventful round two of the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. Changes to Sérgio’s car set-up proved successful in qualifying securing pole position for the race, resulting in a win and the fastest race lap in 1:30.564.

Sérgio Jimenez, ZEG iCarros Jaguar Brazil driver, said: “The weekend was good, I’m really happy with two podium finishes in the first two races. Yesterday was tough as we made some mistakes matching the car to the track, but to come away with a P2 finish was great. Today we changed things and moved in the right direction. I was faster than Simon (Evans) in parts, and he was faster in others, but I was able to manage the pressure. I used ATTACK MODE at the right times too. Winning one race and second in the other and joint leading the series with Simon is a good place to be as we look towards the next race.”

Fresh from his victory in round one yesterday, Simon Evans showcased his competitiveness, challenging Jimenez for the duration of the race. Jimenez defended his position on the narrow Diriyah track, not allowing Evans the opportunity to overtake. Evans started and finished in second.

Abbie Eaton finished in a respectable fifth after joining the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY for the weekend as a VIP driver.

Abbie Eaton, Jaguar VIP driver, said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time driving the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY. I’ve learned a huge amount about how to get the most out of an electric car and it’s really surprised me - in a good way. The racing has been really close with only a few tenths between the top five drivers which makes it even more exciting. I’d love to come back and race for the series in the future.”

After an impressive qualifying in which he challenged the PRO category drivers for grid positions, PRO-AM driver Fahad Algosaibi started the race well. Contact with ZEG iCarros Jaguar Brazil guest driver Mário Haberfeld forced the local Saudi Arabian into the wall, resulting in a red flag with 11 minutes to go. When the race resumed, drivers worked to use their remaining ATTACK MODE to their advantage, with Zhang Yaqi maintaining his winning streak in the PRO-AM category.

Local Saudi VIP Driver Reema Juffali had to retire from the race close to the end due to car damage.

Mark Turner, Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY Series Manager, said: “Round two of the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY has provided another exciting day of racing. The re-start after the red flag showed the importance of choosing the right time to deploy ATTACK MODE. This was the first time we have really seen how influential it can be in a race, and we are looking forward to seeing the impact it has on the series as we move through the season. Congratulations to Sergio Jimenez on his first win of the season. We will now prepare for the next race in Mexico City.”
